The brand was founded in 1980 by Limited Brands company (its underwear brand Victoria "s Secret" Victoria) casual wear brand, the main consumer group is working men and women between the age of 18-45. The name of the shop just started was named "Limited Express", specializing in the sale of women's wear, the current CEO Michael Weiss joined the company in 1981, and 1989 launched the "men's wear".

In May 15, 2007, Limited Brands announced that it sold 67% of Express shares for $600 million to Golden Gate Capital Partners, a private equity firm in Losangeles. In fact, it was officially announced in July 2007 that it acquired 76% instead of 67%.

Recently, Express's retail website has announced its support for overseas orders from more than 60 countries and regions (including China), shipped in Fedex mode and freight at a uniform freight rate of 30USD. Its chief marketing officer Lisa Gavales said that the global shipping business was launched to satisfy those loyal overseas buyers who had consumed the Express brand, because many overseas buyers who had spent Express brands appealed to their official website to support international orders to meet their demand for Express products.
