The Ministry Of Commerce Of Pakistan And Garment Export Companies Discuss The EU'S Tax Exemption Policy

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan held a meeting to discuss 75 EU customs facilities for Pakistan products, including clothing and textiles, with exporters.

India has been opposed to the EU's decision to grant Pakistan duty-free access. Recently, India changed its position and decided to support the EU decision at the WTO meeting.

However, duty-free access is facing fierce competition from Bangladesh's 8 clothing products.

A week ago, at the WTO trade goods (CTG) committee meeting in Geneva, Bangladesh put forward 8 reservations about clothing products, because the EU remains the largest export destination for Bangladesh clothing.

However, Bangladesh has informed the World Trade Organization conference that there will be no objection to Bangladesh if there is no tariff treatment for 8 kinds of Pakistan clothing products.

Pakistan missed the opportunity to receive tax exemption, because Brazil, Peru and Indonesia also raised objections at the Geneva CTG conference.

Generally speaking, the duty free facilities are provided to the least developed countries. Pakistan is a developing country and does not belong to the least developed countries. However, after Pakistan suffered devastating floods last year, the EU asked the EU to give Pakistan 75 tariff free preferential policies.
