Pakistan APTMA Turkey Special

Gohar Ejaz, President of the Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), urged the president Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani to try to get the Turkey government to cancel the special duty on Pakistan cotton.

The implementation of special duties, including denim, grey cloth and processed fabrics, will take a negative impact on Turkey's export of $240 million, which is taken by Pakistan.

According to him, Pakistan's textile exports to Turkey amount to about 350 million US dollars, mainly cotton cloth, which accounts for the total.

70%, once Turkey completes the special safeguard investigation, the Turkey government will levy 30% special duty for three years.

He said that the implementation of such restrictions on products exported to Pakistan was a negation of the eyes of leaders of Turkey and Pakistan. When Turkey President Abdullah Gul visited Pakistan, he said that efforts should be made to raise bilateral trade to $5 billion by 2015.

The president pointed out that exports were deadlocked because of the devastating floods and the cost of countering terrorism, and Pakistan was through the crisis.

He is worried that Turkey will impose more trouble on the Pakistan textile industry after it has imposed special tariffs on Pakistan cotton fabrics.

The fabrics produced in Pakistan are exported to Turkey, and exported to Europe after being made into garments in Turkey. Turkey's weaving industry hardly produces these fabrics.

Therefore, he stressed that the export of cloth in Pakistan could not cause any harm to Turkey's domestic industry.

He hoped that the president and the prime minister would intervene in this matter immediately, urging the leaders of Turkey to solve this problem and win the right of market access for Pakistan textiles.
