The Guangzhou Asian Games will set up 42 events, which is the largest event in the Asian Games history.
Guangzhou will also host the Tenth Asian Games for the disabled after the Asian Games.

In March 2004, there were four cities bidding for the Asian Games: Guangzhou.
Kuala Lumpur
Seoul and Amman, but the other three bidding cities decided to withdraw from competition.
In July 1, 2004, the Asian Olympic Council announced that Guangzhou had the right to host the sixteenth Asian Games.
The emblem of the Guangzhou Asian Games was solemnly announced in November 17, 2006 at the Sun Zhongshan Memorial Hall in Guangzhou. The emblem, with the symbol of Guangzhou as the main body, is the emblem of the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.
In addition to 28 Olympic events, there are 14 items in the Asian Games.
Non Olympic events
The official events include new Chinese traditional games such as weiqi, Wushu, dragon boat, cane ball, cricket and so on.
Guangzhou will build 12 stadiums and gymnasiums on the basis of the existing 58 stadiums to meet the needs of the large Inter Continental games.
The main venues are Guangzhou Olympic Sports Center, Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Center, Guangzhou stadium and other venues.
The main project of Asian Sports Village in Guangzhou new town (media village, athlete village, technical official Village) started construction in May 2008 and is expected to be completed in April 2010.
In 2010, there were three co operation cities in Guangzhou Asian Games. They were Dongguan, Foshan and Shanwei. Three cities produced 15 bronze medals, 14 silver medals and 14 gold medals respectively.
The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games will be held in Haixin Sha Island, Guangzhou.
